NORWICH UNION CLAIM- ADVICE NEEDED?

I recently broke my laptop (wont power on and screen broke) so i rang my contects insurers norwich union
they refered it to a repair company called IVAL . i was happy with this as have a few files on laptop which i dont want to lose , plus iv had the laptop a while now and know how it works etc and would like it repaired
however Ival got intouch and said i would have to cough up £250 (excess) towards any repairs – the repair prob wont be any more than £250 meaning im footing the whole bill
i am a single parent and lost my job recently so have to rely on benefits , i dont get £250 a week and there is no way i can afford this
my policy does state new for old
is there anytrhing i can do – would the insurance company not consider a replacement of the value of the broken one (£699) minus excess so i get a lesser value laptop worth £450 instead
does anyone know anything about this and how insurers work as i dont

I had a similar problem. The best way is to talk to your insurer and tell them. They are reasonable and because its a small claim they want it to be concluded quickly. The longer it drags on, the more money it costs them to solve your problem.
