Is my box turtle going to survive and get better?

Okay so my turtle is in bad shape because we haven’t gotten him the things he needs. We didn’t know that until recently. We’ve had him for eight years and he’s starting to look bad. He has no color, his eyes were fading earlier but now they’re clear, and his nails are long. So I cleaned everything, we bought him a light with a flat rock to lay on, water bowl, the walking on stuff, his bed, and a little burrowing area. We have the right food and everything… so if we keep this up forever will he get a lot better and get color? I’m soaking him in water with some salt to make him get better, then i’ll use it without salt from then on. thanks!

No way to tell without really knowing how bad it was to begin with… (you got a UVB light, too, right?)

If you don’t have it already, I highly suggest you find an purchase a copy of The Box Turtle Manual… it has more information on these turtles than you knew there was to know, and all of it quite useful…

If he’s not too far gone already, there may be hope… the problem with box turtles (and really any reptile for that matter) is that by the time they get to the point that the average person thinks “Wow, there’s something wrong with this thing”, it’s almost too late to do anything about it. Don’t give up hope, though, if you can correct any problems quick enough, he may pull through… I make no promises, though.
